Here you will find information regarding how you can become a Water Safety Instructor and teach the Red Cross Swim Program as well as the Lifesaving Program.
Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor~15 years and older
~ In this prerequiste for the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course, candidates learn foundation instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback. ~ 6.5-8 hours of practice teaching assignments is required at the end of the course for completion. | Water Safety Instructors Course~ 15 years and older
~ Instructor candidates focus on how to apply information from the Assistant Water Safety Instructor course and develop additional instructional skills, stroke development, drills and corrective strategies to plan, teach and evaluate the entire Red Cross Swim continuum. ~ 12 hours of practice teaching is required for course completion. ~ You will be certified for 2 years. |
Water Safety Instructors Recertification~ Current Water Safety Instructor
~ After 2 years, all instructors are required to attend a Water Safety Instructor recertificaiton. | Lifesaving Instructor~ 16 years of age by end of course
~ Bronze Cross ~ Lifesaving Instructors (LSI's) are trained to teach and evaluate the Canadian Swim Patrol program, Bronze programs, Fitness and Excellence programs. Instructor candidates are taught learning styles and teaching methods as they apply to water rescue, first aid, and related aquatic skills in the Canadian Lifesaving Program. Candidates also learn about long-range and short-term planning, class management, safety supervision and the principles of evaluation. The Lifesaving Instructor certification is the prerequisite for all other Lifesaving Society instructor certifications. ~ Candidates can recertify anytime within 5 years from last certification date. If it has been more then 5 years, candidates can attend another Lifesaving Instructor course, or, complete the Bridges assignment and attend an LSI Recert. |
